Acceptance is not enough.

In 2011, Autistic people and Autistic-led organizations reframed April as Autism Acceptance Month—a radical move away from fear-based “awareness.” Today, we honor that legacy and continue forward momentum as we move together toward advocacy for real, systemic change.

What are we doing?

For years, April has been framed as a time for “acceptance” of Autistic people. That shift—led by Autistics and Autistic‑run organizations—was never about simply tolerating us. It was a radical move away from pity and fear-based “awareness” toward seeing Autistic people as whole, valuable human beings.

Acceptance has always been an active choice: choosing to see stimming as communication and regulation, not a behavior to suppress; choosing to reject tragedy narratives; choosing to stand with Autistic people instead of speaking over us. For many families and communities, reaching genuine acceptance is still a brave, transformative step.

And yet, in today’s climate, acceptance is not enough.

Acceptance says, “We see you and value you.”
Advocacy goes further: “We will listen to you, stand with you, and work to change the systems that harm you.”

Autistic people have been leading this work for decades. We know what we need, and we have the experience, history, and expertise to guide real, systemic change. It’s time April fully reflects that reality—honoring the foundations of Autism Acceptance Month while moving with Autistic people from acceptance into action and advocacy.

We’re not waiting for others to accept us anymore. We’re advocating for the world we deserve.

How can we create change?

Change happens when Autistic people are in charge. We are building a movement where our community leads. We are creating something by us, for us. You can help by joining our logo challenge, taking our survey, or telling us why advocacy matters, making donations, and sharing our information.

When you donate, you help make April 2026 the first Autistic Advocacy Month. You help us move from passive acceptance to active advocacy.
